Catholic Expert - What Are Angels?

The bible is very specific concerning angels. These messengers of God are always men and never have wings. The only women with wings are angels of Satan who are building Babylon (Zech. 5:5-11).

Nor are angels ever ‘ghosts’ or spirits of dead men returned to set right their wrongs… So why is everything that we see today concerning angels contrary to what the Bible records as truth?

It seems this compelling facet of Christian lore has evolved beyond the Holy Scriptures. Here’s a bit of the source code:
Cherubim placed in Eden (Gen. 3:24)
Two angels sent to bring Lot out of Sodom (Gen. 19:1-29)
Angel brought Elijah bread and water (I Kings 19:4-8)
Angels shut the lion’s mouth for Daniel (Dan. 6:19-22)
Angel appeared to Mary (Luke 1:26-35)

But what exactly are they? The Bible says angels are “ministering spirits” (Hebrews 1:14).

They are beings of a different nature than humans, but created by God and for God. They cannot marry and have children – ever! Prophets describe how they sometimes act, and how they sometimes appear.

The scriptures detail what Angels do to people who have pleased or displeased God. If one studies all the passages in the Bible that mention angels, one will see that they are very powerful beings that can,
1.) Appear as normal human beings, undetected (Genesis 19:1-29, Hebrews 13:2)
2.) Appear as bright, shinning beings that terrify those who see them (Matthew 28:2-7)
4.) Appear to animals, but invisible to humans (Numbers 22:21-40)
6.) Appear in flames of fire (Exodus 3:2) and in dreams (Matthew 1:20-24)

For obvious reasons angels are now sometimes worshipped independent of Christianity and the idea of ‘Guardian Angels’ has developed from the human desire for one-on-one spiritual protection.

Theology meets mass media when two experts square off to decipher the origin of the modern angel and the trouble they bring today’s Church.
